WIAW #27 – A Funny Story with an Adorable Ending

So who wants to hear a funny story?? I, personally, love a good amusing anecdote. This story isn’t just amusing, but it also has a pretty adorable ending. Here goes:

Last Monday was the first day of my maternity leave. The following post contains all of my eats from that Monday. I wrote this post last Tuesday evening, as I typically do with my What I Ate Wednesday posts. I was super excited to actually have the time to get a post up, too!! I knew it had been a while so I made sure I kept a really great record of my whoooole Monday. I was getting a little sleepy that evening, so I decided I would finish this post up the following morning. I hit the hay around 10:00pm Tuesday the 10th.

annnnnnnnnnnnnd I went into labor at 2:00 AM!!

Miss Emma Grace was born one day early at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. She weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and was twenty inches long. Just in case you don’t follow me on Instagram and haven’t been getting blown up with my baby pictures, here is what I shared with our family and friends to let them know she had finally arrived! It’s so crazy that my little munchkin is already a week old today!!

I will be sharing a post with more pictures and my whole labor story tomorrow for anyone who is is interested in that sort of thing. For today, since this post was already ESSENTIALLY finished, I’m sharing how I spent and what I ate the first day of my maternity leave. Also, I’d like to take a moment here to wish my hubby a very happy 27th birthday today!!! He’s absolutely, positively the sweetest, silliest, sexiest, most genuine person I have ever known, the best daddy to our baby girl, and I am overjoyed to be able to call him my husband. Love you buggle. 🙂

Well howdy doo!!!

I’m not gonna lie to you, I am absolutely tickled to be able to be getting this post up today!! I know that I mentioned in my last post that I’ve been pretty busy over the last few weeks. Well, Monday was officially the first day of my maternity leave. Baby is due TOMORROW!!!! I have a doctor’s appointment today to check and see how things are progressing that I am super looking forward to.

I’ve spent the last two days trying to be as productive as I can while still making sure I’m rested up and ready to go for labor. Or, well, as ready as I can be I suppose. I’ve FINALLY had time to prepare some freezer meals. I made about a dozen breakfast sandwiches (eggs, broccoli, a wee bit o’ bacon, and cheddar frittata style on whole wheat english muffins) 15 chocolate coconut banana muffins, several packs of frozen strawberries and bananas for smoothies, protein flax waffles, chicken fajitas, and spaghetti sauce with ground turkey. It’s not too much, but I’m sure it will definitely be helpful in the coming weeks.

Here is how my first day of maternity leave went down:

 Breakfast: So I wound up waking up around 6:30 on Monday morning. Technically that’s still sleeping in for me on a weekday, because I was usually up at 5:30 to get ready for work and such. I sat down to breakfast at the table with my latest read – Nick Offerman’s “Paddle Your Own Canoe” (Absolutely hilarious. I love everything about this man.) – a cup of decaf english breakfast tea, a whole wheat english muffin topped with almond butter and some of my latest obsession, that is, Wegmans Organic Blueberry Jam. It’s amazing. Seriously. I also had a hard boiled egg with a lil’ black pepper sprinkled on top. It was pretty delightful.

Snack: I’m not usually one for the lil’ fruity greek yogurts because they’re so high in sugar, but I had a coupon for a 12-pack at BJs so I only spent $8 on a dozen. That makes me feel better about them. This guy was pretty delicious.

Snack time was followed by some Yoga. Melinda bought me this DVD for Christmas and although I used it a bit then, it’s not particularly challenging if you’re an experienced yogi in your first or second trimester. Now, though, I’m so thankful I have it! It’s a really great combination of relaxing and challenging at this point in my pregnancy (ya know…ready to pop).

More Snacks: Snack time post yoga was the pregnancy special – 6 dates with a tablespoon of peanut butter and some iced raspberry leaf tea. I’m not usually one to go along with old wives tales and all that jazz, but I figured when it comes to eating dates and drinking raspberry leaf tea, there is no harm in consuming them, so I may as well give it a whirl. There have been studies done linking date consumption in late stage pregnancy to an increased likelihood of spontaneous labor occurring and a decreased likelihood in the need for induction. Date consumption has also been linked to dilation occurring more rapidly. Raspberry leaf tea is recognized for its benefits for women’s health in general. Some folks say it’s supposed to induce labor. Others say it just may make things a bit easier. Regular consumption of raspberry leaf tea has been linked to strengthening and toning the uterus. I’ll let ya know how it all works out for me. 🙂

Lunch: Melinda and I went out for lunch on Monday and snagged some eats at one of our favorite local places – Juice and Java. My go to is the Sun- dried Grilled Chicken Sandwich. It’s grilled chicken, Monterrey jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion with a “chipotle spread” on sun-dried tomato bread. They typically serve their sandwiches and wraps with chips – which are delicious – but they also offer orange wedges on the side if you ask. That’s my personal choice!! I was also delighted to see they had decaf blueberry coffee…which I got and turned into iced coffee and enjoyed every sip of!!

Once we got back from lunch Melinda and I sat down and I finished designing her wedding invitations!! But not before snapping of photo of the babies enjoying their bones together!!

Dinner: I almost forgot to snap a picture of my dinner on Monday, but Johnny was kind enough to remind me. It was pretty simple and delicious. Grilled chicken breasts with a bit of bbq sauce, baked potatoes, and some green beans with almonds (thanks, Green Giant).

Dessert: Johnny went out to do man things on Monday, as per usual, so after dinner I sat down with some strawberries and whipped cream and Battlestar Galactica.

And that’s all she wrote!! As usual, a big shout out to Jenn at Peas and Crayons for hosting this fabulous link-up party. The next time I participate, I’ll (hopefully) be a momma!! Ah!!! That’s nuts!!! Only time will tell, right??

My Favorite Yoga Sequence

Boy, oh, boy have I been a busy gal lately!!

I had such an AMAZING baby shower weekend that I plan to share with you guys, soon, I promise!!

Today I’ve decided it’s finally time to share with you my favorite Yoga sequence! As I approach my 32 week mark, I’m noticing my body is definitely starting to respond differently to exercise. I’m still lifting weights comfortably (and safely!) and though I feel energized during my workouts, I’m definitely much more tired after. Cardio is kind of a sad joke these days. I miss running terribly, and I really look forward to getting back into it once baby is born, but for now I’ve resorted to walking…and even walking makes me have to pee!! ANNNNNNNND I find that once I’ve been walking for about 20 minutes or so, I’m experiencing the same crampy feeling I would get on a long run! It’s so bizarre, really. I’m still just more and more amazed every day by how as I seemingly become “less active,” I feel baby moving around more and more!!!

Also noteworthy, I had a doctor’s appointment today and all is well with baby Emma! She’s super healthy and every time I hear her heartbeat it’s like music to my ears!! It also never gets old to hear the doctor tell me how amazing I look. We all like to have our egos stroked once in a while, amiright?

Anywho, let’s get on to the yoga!! This particular sequence takes me about 25 minutes from start to finish. You can do it anytime of day, really, but I like it first thing in the morning right after rolling out of bed. At that point in time, my brain hasn’t quite turned on yet and my mind is nice and clear and I can really focus on making the most of my practice and breath. It warms up your whole body, releases any tension you may be holding in your hamstrings, calves, hips, and back, and the addition of Goddess and Squat poses help to strengthen and prepare your body for labor! Obviously these poses are beneficial even if you’re not pregnant! I hope you give it a whirl!!

And just for fun – here’s cute  photo I took of myself at the gym last night in my FABULOUS new For Two Fitness “Training for Two” tank top. I am telling you, this is the best workout top I’ve worn in the last 32 weeks!! I wish I had it sooner!! Not only is it effing adorable, it’s cozy, the side ruching doesn’t irritate my skin like some other maternity tops I’ve tried, and it did a great job keeping me cool and dry for my whole workout!! LOVE this tank top! If only they had the Yoga for Two one in stock. C’est la vie!! Happy Tuesday, ya’ll!!

WIAW #17 – The Saturday Edition!

Actually, it’s Tuesday night as I write this… because I do what I want. 😀

I mentioned last week that one of these days I would share my weekend eats with you. Well, you’re in luck, today’s that day!! This right here is my Saturday. I start off pretty strong, but I go out with a bang. Haha. You shall see.

On to the nommies!!

Breakfast: I love breakfast on the weekends!! I love being able to take a little bit of extra time to throw something special together, relax in my pjs, and just enjoy it. During the week, I eat breakfast at my desk at work while going through emails, so it’s really a nice to just sit and eat and do nothing else. This Saturday I threw together one of my favorite oatmeal concoctions. I’m sure you’ll be shocked to hear the ingredient: 1 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1 banana, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, and a sprinkle of chocolate chips!! I make this whipped banana style, slicing it really thin and mixing it right into the oats. I also mix in most of the peanut butter while I cook the oats, too. Then I top it off with a few reserved banana slices, some more peanut butters (because you can never have too much peanut butter) and chocolate chips. It’s decadent and amazing and I love it so, so, so much. In fact I just ate dinner (aka stuffed my face with mac & cheese because the hubby said “It’s Fat Tuesday, make something awesome” ) and now all I want to do is whip up a big pot of them. *sigh*

banana, pb, chia oatsI got up bright and early (which means about 7:30 on a weekend) on Saturday to make sure I had time to enjoy my oatmeal prior to my yoga class. I’m telling you, man, the more I yoga the more I love it and the more I know that I genuinely want to become an instructor after my baby is born. I’m absolutely in the love with the studio I’ve been going to and the instructors there are wonderful!! I took an hour and fifteen minute vinyassa to get my Saturday going and helped myself after to some Blackberry Sage tea for the road!! It’s perfection in a cup!!

tea for the roadLunch: We popped by the mall after my yoga class so I could get re-sized for a bra at Victoria’s Secret. #pregnancyproblems. Whaaaat a process. Really, the size I should be doesn’t exist. And they didn’t have what I wanted in the store. So I just got my “size” from a spectacularly helpful employee and went home and ordered everything online. C’est la vie. I was supppper hungry by the time I got home and showered. I had a leftover fajita burrito (Ya know, kinda like a burrito with no rice…plus all the stuff in fajitias. I make mine with chicken, black beans, peppers, onions, chipotles, and orange juice – among some other spices) but it was mostly beans so I was happy. I wrapped it up in a whole wheat tortilla with some melty cheese, topped it with salsa, and dug in fork and knife style. I also had some baby carrots for good measure, but I wound up sharing a few with Quincy.

Snack: My MIL and I had to snag some groceries for Sunday before the “big storm” hit. (Big storm, my fanny!! I wanted another snow day…I got like 3 inches. At least it’s almost Spring. Sigh. That’s what I keep telling myself anyway.) On the way out I treated us to some coffee – decaf Hazelnut for this gal, please and thank you!! When we got home I also had what has become one of my new favorite snack obsessions – pistachios and blueberry flavored craisins (thanks a lot, Susan! lolz)!

Dinner: Saturday night the family and I attended a fundraiser dinner. It was the 7th Annual Angels for Alyssa Spaghetti Dinner. This is the 3rd year we’ve attended and we always have a great time! One of my mother-in-law’s dear friends from work is the Aunt of Miss Alyssa, a 15 year old girl who was prenatally diagnosed with a rare condition called methylmalonic acidemia (MMA). MMA prevents her body from metabolizing protein. It’s a very touching story, and we’re always more than happy to support Alyssa and her family as they work with their doctor to find a cure! Over the last 7 years they’ve raised over a half a million dollars for MMA research!! The fundraiser is quite a money maker – there is a live auction which is always exciting, a silent auction, and basket raffles!! This year Johnny and I didn’t win anything, but my MIL won a basket filled with Yankee Candles and a $50 visa gift card!! You get a TON of food, too. A big plate of spaghetti with meat sauce, bread and butter, salad, and a ridiculous array of dessert.

Dessert: It’s always a hard time picking out dessert when there are sooooo many options. I wound up going with a plate of cookies – chocolate chip and peanut butter!! I also had a piece of chocolate peanut butter fudge, two fun sized Reese’s…and another peanut butter cookie Melinda brought me later!!


We had a great time dancing a bit, too! There’s a live band that plays throughout the night and they just play classic rock. I loooooved how the dance floor was filled with people all night! That’s the sign of a good time! It’s pretty fantastic to have such fun while supporting such a wonderful cause!! I know we’ll be back next year.

Diiiiiidn’t I tell you that my weekend eats aren’t as spectacular as my weekday ones. Now you’ve seen proof!! If chocolate and peanut butter weren’t so perfect together I might have an easier time – but who cares really? One of my favorite philosophies of eating that I’ve seen floating around the interwebs essentially says that one bad day of eating won’t make you fat…just like one day of healthy eating won’t make you skinny!! Moderation is my motto. And sometimes, baby just wants a peanut butter cookie … or 3. 😀

Eating for Two: 24 Weeks Pregnant

Hey dudes and dudettes!! Happy Monday to you!! Did you do anything exciting this weekend?! I, personally, had a faaaaaaaaaaabulous weekend with the hubs, Bill, Susan, and my Poppa Bear!

We ate a lot, as per usual, and we made an AWESOME healthy(ish) dinner on Saturday. Susan and I took a really interesting yoga class, too. Funny story – the instructor didn’t show up until the last minute so I didn’t have a moment to let her know I was pregnant before class started, which I typically like to do so they know what’s up, but I’m at a point where it’s pretty obvious and I have random strangers congratulating me in Trader Joe’s (for reals!). Well, she didn’t notice the whole time I guess (or just thought I was chubby) so when the time came for Bow Pose and I started cat/cow instead she came up to me to ask me if I was okay so I got to announce to the whole class (which was HUGE by the way, like 40+ people! I’ve never taken a yoga class with so many people in it!!) that I was pregnant. She laughed and was apologetic after. I take it as a compliment, though, because the flat-on-my-belly stuff are the only poses I need to modify right now! I even rocked Crow pretty hard, which I was impressed with, because I really haven’t practiced it the last 24 weeks.

Anywho, onto the survey! I was getting bored of the same questions with so many of my answers being the same week to week lately, so I found some new questions to pop in here! Hope you enjoy!

24 weeks

How far along: 24 weeks, 4 days

Total weight gain/loss:  137 lbs – 22 lbs gained total so far. I’m feeling good and right on track!!

Maternity clothes? Oh you bet!! I’m living in leggings lately. The fact that hoodies don’t even hide my belly anymore is crazy!

Stretch marks? Nope!! Let’s *knock on wood* hope it stays that way!!

Sleep: Meh – the last few nights I’ve been waking up a whole bunch. Not for any particular reason, but it’s still not much fun.

Miss anything? I’m doing well on this front. I still submit that the two things I have missed the most since finding out I was pregnant are over easy eggs and the sauna. Otherwise I’m peachy-keen.

Movement: You bet!! This little miss is becoming more and more active every day – which I take to be a good thing!! She’s already kind of on a schedule, too. I feel her usually between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning, around lunch time, around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon, and at bedtime (which lately is around 9:30 or 10:00).

Food cravings:  For the last two weeks allllll I’ve wanted was to eat some shrimp!! I FINALLY got my wish last night and made Shrimp Scampi and it was perfection. (Thanks again for the shrimp, Kyle 😉 ) I’ll be sharing that recipe this Thursday.

Food aversions: Nope!

Anything making you queasy or sick: Nope!

Best moment this week: Saturday in general was pretty fantastic. I loved getting some girl time in with Susan and our friend Brenna, who I hadn’t had to opportunity to hang out with in quite some time! We went to yoga and grabbed a lite brunch. Then Susan and I went to Trader Joe’s which was AWESOME because there are none by me (COME TO CENTRAL PA, TRADER JOES!!). We picked up some really great produce, a delicious mixed berry oatmeal blend, some rosemary foccacia we enjoyed with dinner on Saturday, and I snagged some chia seeds on the cheap!! My Dad came over and hung out for dinner. I love long nights spent in the kitchen and at the dinner table just chatting over a long dinner. It was such a perfect day!!

Labor signs: No. That’s just silly.

Symptoms: I guess I’ve actually been pretty “symptom free” for the last two weeks! Hooray!

Belly Button in or out? In!

Wedding rings on or off? On!

Happy or Moody most of the time:  Been feeling slightly less moody the last week or so (no matter what my husband says!).

Looking forward to: This Sunday I plan to catch up with some of my girl friends over coffee!! I can’t wait to see all of their beautiful faces. 😀

Home or hospital birth? No matter how much I don’t care for hospitals I don’t think I’d ever really be down for a home birth. 

Natural or medicated birth? At this point in time I’m comfortable saying that I intend to do this thing au natural. However, if during my labor it gets to a point where I don’t feel like I can hack it I won’t be heartbroken if I decide I need an epidural. I can’t predict the future, ya know?  Johnny and I have discussed this at length. He’ll be with me and encouraging me and we can hope it’s enough buuuuut we’re pretty realisic people, too. So, I’ll really only know the answer to this questions when the big day arrives!

Who will be in the delivery room with you? Just Johnny and the medical staff.

Will you breastfeed? I will do everything I can to make it happen!

Do you think you’ll need a c-section? I don’t think so…I hope not…but again…if it’s necessary I’ll deal with it and I won’t get too worked up about it.

Will you cry when you hold the baby for the first time? Heh – that’s like asking me if I’ll eat peanut butter today. (That answer, of course, is DUH!)

What’s the first thing you might say to her? Oh goodness, who knows, probably something incomprehensible because I’ll be crying so hard. Ha.

Would you let someone videotape the birth? Nooooooooope. The only people who need to see it will be there in the room with me.

Are you excited or scared about the birth? Well obviously I’m super excited!! I think I’m a very healthy combination of the two, actually. Haha. I can’t wait to meet this little munchkin and see her pretty little face and hold her, but ya know, popping her out is a little intimidating.

Monday Motivation

I’m not going to lie….today…I kinda had a case of the Mondays. It happens to the best of us, I know. I was a super grump this morning. I had such a nice weekend with the hubs I just didn’t want it to end and have to go to work. But then, in my browsing of the internet, I saw this and I was all uplifted and whatnot.

How am I going to change my life this week??

This was a little deep for me at 8 o clock in the morning, but the more I thought about it, the more I decided…”Why the heck not change my life this week?!

How about I run more miles this week than I have any other week in my life ever?! I’m going to run 10 miles this week.

Now to some of you fitness monsters out there this may not seem all that life changing. “Seriously, I run 10 miles on a Saturday.”  I know that this may seem like no big deal to some people. If you talked to me a year ago – heck – six months ago, this is not something I would have ever attempted or even considered a possibility. “I’m not a runner! I hate running!” That was always my excuse.

Well ya know what. I’m DONE with excuses. I can be a runner if I want to be! Everyone hates something if they think they suck at it. Like poker – I hate poker! I also suck at poker. Ya pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down?

So, today at the gym I did a new arm routine, increasing my usual weight, and I did 7 solid minutes of planks and side planks which I was super proud of. I spent quite a while lifting so I only had 15 minutes to run but I got in a mile and a half. Only 8 and a half more to go this week!!

goofypidgeonpose After I run I like to stretch out with yoga. I mean, I like to do yoga as often as possible, but I reaaaaaaallllly like it after a run. (Note that it’s actually quite difficult to try and snap a selfie in king pigeon pose…but I succeeded!)

Then, I made a faaaaaaaaantastic-super-quick-and-easy-healthy-dinner consisting of shrimp cooked with loads of garlic, spaghetti squash with parmesan cheese, and a super lite arugula salad with a lemon dijon vinaigrette!!! Oh sweet baby Jesus…seriously I devoured it. Johnny was a little skeptical about the spaghetti squash but he went back for seconds and I was soooo thrilled!!! It’s the little things in life..ya know.

Speaking of the little things in life…I’m going to enjoy some now. That is – chocolate milk, snuggles, and Parks & Rec on Hulu.

I’ll post my shrimp recipe tomorrow!!
